Michael Hayes: Exhausting one-man show
Michael Hayes, David Caruso's latest (1997) attempt to revive his flagging career, an "adult drama" about a hard-as-nails U.S. Attorney with a heart of gold. It was pretty sad, wallowing in the cartoon-crusader hijinks that made the final years of Lou Grant so sickening...........
....
Michael Hayes, lacks much of the loamy subtext that already makes shows like "Brooklyn South" so rich and fertile. Caruso is Hayes, an ex-cop jumped up to federal prosecutor and a guy so stand-up, he takes care of his deadbeat brother's little kid (the adorable Jimmy Galeota) while putting mobsters in the slammer. Paul Haggis, the writer-director who made the Finnegans Wake of cop shows, EZ Streets, was imported when the Hayes plot turnedd up looking like a very special Matlock episode. After a positive getting-to-know-you confab with the star, Haggis signed on as exec producer -- only to quickly butt heads with a prickly Caruso on set. (He once again lived up to his bad reputation - well done!!!)
Haggis, who received a ''Developed By'' credit at the start of the show, has given the series a moody look to match its star's trademark smolder. The Carrot Top of Method actors needed vivid supporting players to prevent the series from becoming an exhausting one-man show. Michael Hayes ended up being a program that makes you realize the importance of...Dennis Franz.

Caruso once called Michael Haynes his "work of love"....well if this sad little show is ALL he is capable of delivering....no wonder his career went NOWHERE....
